Overview of the ASCP
ASCP was founded in 1922 to achieve greater scientific proficiency in clinical pathology, and to maintain the status of clinical pathologists on an equal plane with other specialists. In 2002, the Society's name changed to the American Society for Clinical Pathology to reflect the diversity of membership--both physicians and laboratory professionals--and to move forward as a unifying force for the entire laboratory team.
With more than 100,000 members, the American Society for Clinical Pathology is the world’s largest society representing the pathology and laboratory medicine. The mission of ASCP is to advance excellence in education, certification, and advocacy on behalf of patients, pathologists and laboratory professionals.
ASCP offers a broad range of continuing medical education programs in surgical pathology, cytopathology and all areas of laboratory medicine for pathologists, residents and laboratory professionals. ASCP is also the resource for pathologists’ Maintenance of Certification needs and laboratory professionals’ Certification Maintenance Program requirements.
The following is a summary of ASCP’s educational and assessment products available to you through Lab Advantage:

CheckPath is a competency assessment program that allows pathologists and laboratory professionals to evaluate, document, and improve their diagnostic skills. CheckPath cases assess strengths and identify knowledge areas requiring further development.
Here's how it works. Each quarter, five to seven cases that have been carefully reviewed by a panel of experts are sent to subscribers. Each case is accompanied by glass slides, and/or laboratory data. All cases present unknowns for diagnostic interpretation. The cases are representative of daily practice and do not include esoteric diagnoses. Simply review the cases, select the best interpretation for each case from a list of possible diagnoses, and fax responses to the ASCP.
Laboratory and participant score reports compile the responses of all participants and provide a confidential comparison of performance against peers. These reports are ideal documentation of competency assessment for laboratory accreditation surveys. A concise, referenced discussion of each case addresses the distribution of responses selected and distinguishes the preferred interpretation from the selected options. Eligible for CME, CMLE and SAMs credit.. . . . .
